Who doesn’t love gifts? Receiving or giving, there is a reason why gifting is one of the five languages of love. What can beat that warm glow in your chest and the excitement you feel when presented with a gift? Scientifically speaking, when we gift someone, our brain pathways release the oxytocin hormone, commonly referred to as the cuddle hormone. You are essentially rewarded with a feel-good rush when you present a present to someone. See what I did there?
Gift-giving goes back to ancient cultures like the Romans and Greeks. Who knows? Cavemen could have probably given each other uniquely shaped stones or stone art to show a connection or strengthen bonds. Just goes to show that it has always been an important part of human interaction.
Although most of us tend to only give gifts on special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries, why wait to make someone’s day? You do not have to wait for milestones in life to buy gifts for the people in your life.
A study conducted in 2008 shows that we are happier when we spend money on someone else rather than ourselves. While that sounds like a selfish reason, remember you will be bringing happiness into the other person’s day. That sounds like a win-win situation to me.
If you still need an excuse or a reason to buy the gift, I have got you covered.
TO EXPRESS LOVE
Some people are not good with words, especially when it comes to articulating how much we love the people in our lives. As cliché as it may sound, actions do speak louder than words. If it’s hard to find the right words, find the right gift to speak for you.
TO REWARD A JOB WELL DONE
This shows you have noticed the effort made and you are proud of their accomplishments. When your child does well in school, you can reward them with the toy they have been asking for.
In a professional environment, you can treat your employees to lunch or give out vouchers. It will boost morale and motivate the employees.
TO CHEER SOMEONE UP
An unexpected gift is a sure way of improving someone’s day. If a friend is going through a tough time – let’s say they lost a job opportunity – a small gift would show them that you care, were thinking of them and that you wished them better luck next time.
TO SHOW APPRECIATION
When the people in our lives do us favours or go out of their way to help us, it’s good to acknowledge that and show our appreciation. Let’s say a friend woke up at the crack of dawn to drive you to the airport, a small gift is a way of saying “Thank you.”
WHEN SOMEONE NEEDS SOMETHING
A gift that meets a need will be truly appreciated. Gifts do not have to be products. An act of Service still counts. If your friend has to go out of town for business, you can offer to look after their kids for a couple of days thereby alleviating their stress and worry.
Remember no special reason is one of the best reasons for buying a gift for a loved one.
Pro tip: If choosing a gift is becoming stressful, you can opt for gift experiences rather than things. Get them that spa treatment, weekend get-away or tickets to their favourite movie and I guarantee you that’s a gift they will never forget.
